WASHINGTON, DC - Howard's Mario Martin broke free inside the 18-yard box and beat charging George Washington goalkeeper Jake Davis for the deciding goal with 25 seconds left as the Colonials men's soccer team fell to the Bison, 1-0, on the final day of the DC College Cup at American's Reeves Field Saturday.
The final minute proved to be the most frantic in a match that was played mostly in the midfield and saw both teams record just three shots on target and generate few scoring opportunities.
Martin was dealt a yellow card with 35 seconds left for a foul committed in GW's box. Davis, who made his first collegiate start in goal for the Colonials, sent the free kick just past midfield where it was collected by Bison defender Kashmar Briscoe. Briscoe quickly found Martin behind the GW backline and the freshman forward slotted a shot around Davis for the game-winning goal at the 89:35 mark.
Martin and freshman Andrew Aluko got tangled up just after the restart and both received yellow cards, the second of the match for Martin which reduced the Bison to 10 men for the final 15 seconds.
Rookie Bailey Hinners put the ball back in play with a 50-yard free kick toward the Howard net, but goalkeeper Larry Turner picked off the threat and held on until time expired.
GW's best chances all came in the second half. Freshman Abdul Shaban sent a header just over the right corner in the 47th minute, then narrowly missed the left corner of net with a bending left-footed free kick from 23 yards in the 59th minute. Turner parried sophomore Zach Abaie's six-yard volley into the post and pounced on the loose ball at the 68:00 mark.
Davis, who was forced into goalkeeper duties after sophomore starter Brendan Lafferty was injured in Wednesday's season-opening loss to George Mason, finished with two saves on 13 shots faced. Turner also faced 13 shots and made three stops for the clean sheet.
GW (0-2-0) travels to Farmville, VA, Wednesday to face Longwood. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
