WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team held a 22-8 advantage in shots, but UDC's Wilfredo Roque curled in a driven corner kick for the contests only goal as the Colonials fell to the Firebirds, 1-0, at Mount Vernon Field Saturday afternoon.
GW (1-6-0) will look to snap its four-match slide Wednesday when it travels to Navy for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
The Colonials dictated play from the onset and registered six shots in the opening 24 minutes of the match, forcing Firebirds' goalkeeper Kyle Heatherington to make four saves.
It appeared as though GW caught a break at the 19:00 mark when UDC's leading scorer Desean Ragland was sent off following an altercation with Colonials' defender Alex Sandland. Firebirds' coach Khary Stockton was also sent off for his reaction to the play.
However, UDC (3-4-1) got the only break of the match 5:31 after being reduced to 10 men when Roque's corner to the near post was punched in by senior goalkeeper Erik Haug, who was making his first appearance for GW this season. The Firebirds then dropped eight players into their defensive third to protect the slimmest of margins.
GW sent wave after wave of attacks at UDC throughout the second half, holding a commanding 11-2 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes, but couldn't get past Heatherington and the compact Firebirds' defense.
The Colonials' best opportunity at an equalizer came in the 63rd minute when sophomore defender Daniel Ripperger-Suhler rose to meet a corner kick, but his powerful header struck the near post.
Heatherington finished with six saves - five in the first half - for his second clean sheet of the season. Haug made two first have saves in his first action since Nov. 6, 2009.
