WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's water polo team's cumulative grade-point average of 3.54 led the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) 21 varsity programs for the 2010 season, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Colonials also placed eight student-athletes on the CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team. All eight were previously honored on the ACWPC Scholar-Athlete Team on June 29.
GW narrowly edged Macalester College (3.53) and Connecticut College (3.53) for the league's best combined team GPA. It marks the third straight season the Colonials have posted a combined team GPA of 3.0 or better.
2010 graduate Marissa Stamler earned Scholar-Athlete Team distinction with outstanding status for the third straight year with a cumulative grade-point average between 3.71 and 4.0. Stamler, who was also named to CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District II Second Team in May, led GW and ranked in the Top 40 nationally in goals and points and earned First Team All-South honors from the CWPA in 2010.
Teammates Monica Hanson, Jessie Hurd and Erin Delker joined Stamler with outstanding status, with Delker earning a spot on the Scholar-Athlete Team for the second year in a row.
2010 graduate Bernadette Karandy and rising junior Megan Walker appeared on the Scholar-Athlete Team for the third and second times, respectively, with superior status with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.7.
2010 graduate Tara Sullivan and rising senior Charlotte Schou earned excellent distinction with GPAs between 3.2 and 3.4 for the second consecutive year.
Athletes were nominated by their coach/sports information director and were active participants on the team and a full-time student at the institution which nominated them. Further, each student-athlete achieved a 3.2 cumulative Grade Point Average or higher based on the most recent grades posted through the spring semester of the 2009-10 academic year.
