WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Naval Academy amassed 180 points to win the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 23rd George Washington Invitational Regatta, Friday and Saturday, on the Potomac River. It marked the 12th time the Midshipmen have won the point trophy.
Navy easily outscored runner-up Cornell (117 pts.). Columbia was third with 111 points, nine more than the host Colonials who placed fifth with 102 points. The event is held each April in conjunction with the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Cornell's men edged the U.S. Naval Academy to capture the Oliver T. Carr Bowl awarded to the team with the highest men's point total. The Big Red and Midshipmen tied with 117 points each but Cornell earned the tie-breaker by having the fastest time in the men's Varsity Eight. The Big Red completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:15.6, 14 seconds faster than Navy's 5:29.4. It marked Cornell's first overall combined point title in the event and its 5:15.6 was the sixth-fastest time in the history of the event. The Big Red was the runner-up in the 2007 Regatta to the host Colonials of George Washington. The event is held each April in conjunction with the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
For the second straight year, Columbia's women won the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl for accumulating the highest women's team point total. The Lions totaled 111 points to outscore runner-up Central Florida by 39 points.
Racing conditions were nearly ideal Saturday under sunny skies with temperatures in the low to mid 60s. A moderate tailwind and tailcurrent made for fast conditions in the afternoon.
GW's men's varsity eight won its final race of the weekend by defeating Holy Cross by nine seconds. The GW women's varsity eight edged A-10 opponent Dayton by two seconds on Friday afternoon but were more than 15 seconds behind Navy in a Saturday afternoon dual race.
The next race for the GW men will be Friday, April 24, when they take on Rutgers and Georgetown in Piscataway, NJ.
