Women's Water Polo Finishes West Coast Swing With Split

REDLANDS, CA - Senior Marissa Stamler led the Colonials in scoring in both games - the fifth time in seven West Coast games - as the George Washington women's water polo team split its final two games of spring break with a 10-8 victory over Fresno Pacific and 10-9 loss at CWPA Division III No. 3 Redlands.
GW won four of its seven games in California to move to 6-9 overall this season. Stamler was the offensive spark for the Colonials, totaling a team-high 24 goals in seven outings to increase her career total to 123 goals and move past Kendra Shanley into fifth all-time in program history.
In Saturday's opener, Stamler netted four goals and added an assist as GW led 5-3 after a quarter and maintained a multi-goal cushion in defeating Fresno Pacific. Senior Bernadette Karandy (1g/3a) and sophomore Allison Peotter (2g/2a) each added four points, with Peotter chipping in five steals. Senior Tara Sullivan, sophomore Monica Hanson and rookie Jessie Hurd rounded out the Colonials' scoring against the Sunbirds.
Stamler then provided a hat trick and six other players tallied a goal as GW led Redlands throughout much of the game, but the host Bulldogs used a 5-3 run in the fourth-quarter for the come-from-behind win. Peotter, Hanson, Karandy, senior Emily Chereson, junior Erin Delker and sophomore Megan Walker had the other goals, and junior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made nine saves against the nation's third-ranked Division III program.
GW returns to the East Coast this week and will travel to Villanova, PA, Friday to face the Wildcats before resuming CWPA Southern Division play at Bucknell Saturday.
