LA VERNE, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team opened its West Coast spring break with a pair of victories Wednesday. GW rolled to a 14-1 victory over host La Verne, then followed with a 9-7 triumph over Whittier behind senior Marissa Stamler's six-goal effort.
GW (4-6) got goals from eight different players, led by three apiece from sophomores Megan Walker and Monica Hanson, in its 14-1 rout over La Verne. The Colonials led 5-1 after a quarter and wouldn't allow a goal the rest of the way in their most one-sided victory since a 17-4 win over Macalester in March 2007.
Sophomore Allison Peotter and senior Bernadette Karandy chipped in two goals, with Peotter adding two assists and four steals. Seniors Sarah Fitch, Emily Chereson and Stamler and rookie Jessie Hurd netted her completed the scoring. Junior Charlotte Schou and sophomore Antonia Raris split 10 saves in the victory.
Stamler then exploded for six goals, including three during a decisive 3-1 fourth-quarter run, to help GW knock-off CWPA Division III No. 6 ranked Whittier. After grabbing a 2-1 lead after eight minutes, the Colonials and Poets were tied 4-4 at halftime and 6-6 after three quarters before Stamler took over.
Peotter added a goal, three assists and two steals, while Chereson and Karandy each netted a goal. Schou turned away seven shots to earn the win.
Stamler now leads GW with 17 goals this season and has 105 for her career, 10 shy of moving into the Top 5 in program history.
GW will face Concordia in Irvine, CA, at 3:00 pm ET Thursday.
