LEWISBURG, PA - The George Washington women's water polo team found its offense in its final game of the Bucknell Bison Invitational Saturday, defeating Siena, 10-7, behind hat tricks from seniors Marissa Stamler and Emily Chereson. The Colonials dropped their first game of the afternoon to Wagner, 7-3.
GW (1-2) converted just 3-of-24 shots, including 2-of-10 man-advantage opportunities and 1-of-3 five-meter penalties, in falling to Wagner in Saturday's opener. Senior Tara Sullivan and sophomores Allison Peotter and Megan Walker provided the goals for the Colonials, who fell behind 3-0 after the first quarter and couldn't get any closer. Junior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou totaled six saves in the loss.
Led by Stamler and Chereson's six combined goals, the Colonials erased a 3-2 first-quarter deficit by outscoring the Saints 8-4 the final three periods to post their first victory of the young 2010 season. GW converted 4-of-9 man-advantage chances and 2-of-3 penalties to help seal the win. Sullivan, Peotter, Walker and junior Erin Delker added goals, while Schou stopped 12 shots for her first victory. Peotter also added three steals and two assists.
GW returns to action at the two-day, four-game Princeton Invitational next weekend. The Colonials open with No. 18 Brown and Colorado State on Saturday, followed by Gannon and Harvard on Sunday.
