WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's and women's squash teams both opened their season on Friday afternoon at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center. Both teams played to 9-0 victories over district rival Georgetown.
The #17 ranked women's team ladder featured six freshmen players and all recorded victories in their debut matches at GW. #1 Freshman Jackie Shea cruised to a 3-0 decision in her Foggy Bottom debut over Katie O'Mealia. Also recording 3-0 victories were freshmen Elizabeth Tapley, Becca Imrich, Kyung Min Kim and Maya Nair. GW only dropped one game in the match, as freshman #2 Kelly Barnes defeated Kiran Gandhi 3-1.
On the men's side, the Colonials also recorded a 9-0 victory over the Hoyas. Sophomore Islam El-Fiky, the 165th ranked men's player in the world, dominated in his first match at GW. He defeated Georgetown's Nigel Anthony in convincing fashion 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-3).
Also victorious in his GW debut was freshman Chris Bell. Bell defeated Devin Moore 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-7). Sophomore Omar Sobhy picked up where he left off last season and cruised to a 3-0 decision over Pat Trousdale and junior Adam Pistel had little trouble as he defeated Charlie Bolton 3-0.
Also recording wins for the Colonials were senior Mike Bower, juniors Jose Calderon and Brett Feldman, and sophomores Sam Ehrlich and Player Haynes.
NOTES Prior to the match a dedication ceremony was held, as the courts at Lerner Health and Wellness Center were officially renamed the "Matthew J.
