Colonials Reclaim George Cup; First Time Since 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - Competing in near-perfect conditions, the 17th ranked George Washington University men's varsity eight defeated league rivals #19 Georgetown and Rutgers yesterday on the Potomac River to reclaim the George Cup.
In the varsity eight, the Colonials jumped out to an early lead and slowly extended the margin to just over four seconds by the finish line, with Rutgers finishing another five seconds behind Georgetown. GW's 2nd varsity eight followed a similar strategy, pushing out to a length lead at the 1000m mark of the course, and then holding off the charging Hoya crew at the finish line to win by about 6 seats. The Scarlett Knights followed in third place.
The Colonials only loss of the day came in the freshman eight, where Georgetown took command of the race from the start and powered to a five second margin of victory over 2nd place GW. Rutgers finished in third place, nearly four seconds behind the Colonials. GW's 2nd freshman eight continued its winning ways, topping the second place Hoyas by four seconds with Rutgers rounding out the field another two seconds back from Georgetown.
Next up for GW Men's Rowing: The Colonials face #11 Boston University on Saturday morning, May 2, in Chicago. That afternoon, GW squares off against #18 Dartmouth
