Women's Water Polo Tops Bucknell, Places Third at Southerns

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Nine different players scored, led by freshman Allison Peotter's three goals, as the George Washington women's water polo team snapped a 29-game losing skid against conference foes with a 12-11 overtime victory over Bucknell in the consolation of the CWPA Southern Division Championship Saturday.
The victory marked GW's (6-21) first against a CWPA South opponent since topping Maryland in the 2005 Southern Championship third-place contest and snapped an 18-game slide against Bucknell.
The Colonials trailed by three goals early and 5-3 at halftime, but managed to tie the score at 6-6 after three quarters and 9-9 to force overtime. Both teams scored once in the first three-minute overtime session, until Peotter netted a pair in the second extra session to lift GW to the one-goal victory and its highest Southern Championship finish since 2005.
Freshman Megan Walker added two goals, followed by one apiece from seniors Luciana Maggiolo and Amy Moren, juniors Sarah Fitch, Marissa Stamler, Bernadette Karandy and Tara Sullivan, and sophomore Erin Delker. Sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Schou stopped 15 shots to earn the victory.
GW opened the Southern Championship with a 15-7 loss to top-ranked and eventual champion Maryland. The Colonials trailed 5-0 in the second period and wouldn't get any closer than 7-3 at intermission in the tournament's opening contest. Peotter, Delker and Moren had two goals apiece, with Stamler chipping in the other goal. Schou finished with 10 saves.
Peotter finishes her rookie season among GW's Top 5 in single-season goals (49), assists (32), points (81) and steals (71), along with setting the program mark for swim-offs won with 68. Schou concludes the season with 286 saves, the third-highest single-season mark in school history.
