Women's Water Polo Drops Pair in California

IRVINE & RIVERSIDE, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team dropped a pair of contests in its next to last day on the West Coast, losing 13-8 to Concordia (CA) and 9-7 to California Baptist in its opener at the Lancer Invitational Friday.
GW (3-15) opened the afternoon with a five-goal loss at Concordia (CA), falling behind the Eagles 5-1 after a quarter and 8-2 at halftime before succumbing by a 13-8 margin.
Freshman Allison Peotter led the Colonials with four goals and three steals, while junior Marissa Stamler added two goals and junior Tara Sullivan and sophomore Melissa Sesana rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made nine stops in the loss.
The Colonials lost 9-7 to host California Baptist in their first of two games at the Lancer Invitational in Friday late game, their second loss to the Lancers during the West Coast road swing. After trailing 4-2 following the first quarter, GW battled back to tie the game at 6-6 through three quarters and grab a 7-6 lead in the fourth, but Cal Baptist netted the final three goals to come away with the two-goal victory.
Stamler led with two goals, followed by one apiece from Peotter, Sullivan, senior Luciana Maggiolo, junior Bernadette Karandy and freshman Megan Walker. Schou finished with 12 saves, including a penalty block.
GW finishes its week-long West Coast trip Saturday at 11:00 am PT against CWPA Division III No. 9 Chapman in its final game of the Lancer Invitational.
