Women's Water Polo Ends Convergence With Two Tough Losses

CLAREMONT, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team surrendered a pair of 6-1 second-quarter runs in losses to CWPA Varsity No. 7 California, 18-8, and CWPA Division III No. 7 Redlands, 9-5, on the final day of the Claremont Convergence Sunday.
Junior Marissa Stamler scored the first two goals of the game to give GW an early 2-0 lead over 7th-ranked Cal just 2:13 into the first quarter. The Golden Bears responded with a 5-1 run to close the first period, then used a 6-1 rally during the second quarter to lead 11-4 at the break and cruised past the Colonials in the second half.
Freshman Megan Walker joined Stamler with two goals, while seniors Amy Moren and Luciana Maggiolo, junior Tara Sullivan and rookie Allison Peotter added a goal apiece. Sophomore Charlotte Schou (five saves) and freshman Antonia Raris (six) combined for 11 saves in split duties in goal.
GW (2-12) grabbed a 1-0 first-quarter lead in its final game of the Convergence, but Redlands netted six of seven goals during the second quarter, extended its lead to 8-2 through three quarters and withstood a late Colonials' rally for the 9-5 victory. Peotter and junior Sarah Fitch netted two goals apiece, with Stamler completing the scoring. Schou made eight stops in the loss.
The Colonials take two days off before visiting D-III No. 8 Whittier Wednesday at 5:00 pm PT.
