Women's Water Polo Opens Claremont Convergence With Losses

CLAREMONT, CA - Less than 12 hours after arriving on the West Coast, the George Washington women's water polo team fell to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-5, and California Baptist, 12-6, on Day 1 of the Claremont Convergence Saturday afternoon.
GW (2-10) arrived at its hotel at roughly 12:00 am PT before facing the host Athenas, the No. 3 ranked team in the CWPA Division III Top 10, at 10:20 am Saturday morning. The Colonials trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, but managed to tie it, 3-3, at halftime and remained knotted at 4-4 through three quarters. CMS opened the fourth with three unanswered goals to pull away for the victory.
Freshman Allison Peotter netted a hat trick and senior Amy Moren and rookie Megan Walker added a goal apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Schou had 10 saves for the Colonials, who converted just 1-of-6 man-up opportunities.
The Colonials jumped ahead of California Baptist 2-0 in the first quarter, but allowed seven of the contests' next eight goals to trail 7-3 at the break en route to a 12-6 loss in their second game Saturday. Schou registered 12 saves and Peotter scored two goals to lead GW, with Moren, Walker, senior Luciana Maggiolo and junior Emily Chereson chipping in goals.
GW now rests before facing a pair of No. 7 ranked teams on the final day of the Claremont Convergence Sunday. The Colonials take on CWPA Varsity No. 7 California at 10:20 am PT and CWPA Division III No. 7 Redlands at 5:00 pm PT.
