POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The George Washington women's water polo team defeated St. Francis (NY), 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Championship Saturday afternoon, but fell to host Marist, 7-5, and Wagner, 9-8, in its final two games to finish in fourth place, still the program's best finish at the event.
Freshmen Allison Peotter and Megan Walker scored three goals apiece to lead GW to Saturday's opening victory over St. Francis (NY). The Colonials used a 3-0 second quarter to grab a 4-2 halftime lead and extended their margin to 7-3 through three quarters to post the victory. Senior Amy Moren added two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made eight saves.
GW grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first quarter of its semifinal contest Saturday evening, but host Marist pulled ahead 3-2 at the break and 6-3 through three quarters. The Colonials managed to close within a goal, 6-5, late in the fourth quarter, but the Red Foxes got an insurance goal for the 7-5 victory. Moren led the offense with two goals, followed by goals from Peotter, Walker and junior Marissa Stamler. Schou stopped a career-high 15 saves.
In Sunday's third-place game, GW jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Wagner netted five unanswered goals, including the game-winner with two minutes remaining, in a 9-8 defeat. Peotter, who was riddled with foul trouble throughout the game against the Seahawks, tallied her second hat trick of the tournament. Stamler scored two goals, while Moren, Walker and junior Emily Chereson chipped in one goal apiece. Schou again reached double-digit saves with 11.
GW (2-7) completes its Smith Center Pool schedule Thursday at 7:00 pm against CWPA Southern Division rival Bucknell.
