Jacoby, Women's Water Polo Shuts Down Siena, 7-5

PRINCETON, NJ - Senior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby made eight saves, including a pair of penalty blocks, to help the George Washington women's water polo team to a 7-5 victory over Siena at the Princeton Invitational Sunday. The Colonials went 1-3 at the two-day event.
In Sunday's invitational finale, GW (2-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter and didn't relinquish the lead in defeating Siena. Sophomore Emily Chereson led the Colonials with two goals and Jacoby added six steals and forced a miss on a third penalty attempt to clinch the win.
GW opened the Princeton Invite with an 8-6 loss to Harvard on Saturday despite a 15-save effort from Jacoby. Senior Greta Pedraza led the offense with two goals, but the Colonials fell behind in the second quarter and couldn't overcome the deficit.
The Colonials wrapped play Saturday with a 20-3 loss against 15th-ranked Michigan. Chereson, junior Amy Moren and sophomore Tara Sullivan each scored, but GW converted just 2-of-16 man-advantage opportunities against the nationally ranked Wolverines.
GW faced another Top 20 opponent in No. 6 San Diego State in Sunday's opener. After a scoreless first half, the Colonials closed to 8-3 after the third quarter, but the Aztecs held GW scoreless over the final eight minutes in the 11-3 loss. Jacoby (8 saves) and freshman Charlotte Schou (3) combined for 11 saves, while sophomores Danielle Mayer, Marissa Stamler and Bernadette Karandy had goals.
GW travels to College Park, MD, next weekend for the Maryland Terrapin Invitational. The Colonials open with Wagner Saturday at 8:00 am.
