Colonials Frosh Finish 3rd in Fall Season Finale

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The George Washington Freshman Men's Rowing Team closed its fall season this past weekend with a 3rd place finish in Charlottesville against a number of other top freshman teams. Each team fielded two even boats, and the final results were judged on combined times of both boats for each team. The Colonials' eights finished 6th and 10th overall, but their combined time of 26:47 put GW in 3rd place behind Marietta College and the Naval Academy.
"This has historically been a relatively small and informal race between area schools," said freshman coach James Sands. "This year, with the cancellation of Princeton's longstanding freshman regatta, this race grew dramatically. The folks at UVA put on a first class event, and the racing was very good, all around."
According to head coach Greg Myhr, many teams, including GW, put a high value on freshman fall racing that features even boats. "The format of this race, with two even eights, measures a combination of team depth and top end speed, which are probably of equal importance to us at this time of year. The upshot of this racing is that we are in the hunt - every frosh team will be markedly faster by the spring season, but we have a very competitive group of guys to work with."
The racing on Saturday also featured a fours event, with traditional timing - each boat was ranked based on its individual time. GW fielded four crews in this event, taking 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.
The Colonials resume racing on Saturday, March 21 in Philadelphia where they will be defending the McCausland Cup against the University of Pennsylvania.
