PRINCETON, NJ - The George Washington University Men's Rowing Team brought a full contingent to Sunday's Princeton Chase Regatta at Princeton University. "Between Varsity and Freshman Crews, we had 39 athletes competing yesterday, and every crew we fielded represented GW very nicely," said Head Coach Greg Myhr. In the Varsity Heavyweight Eights event, GW placed 15th and 29th. "There was some incredibly close racing in the varsity eights race, " said Myhr. "13 through 18 places were separated by less than 2 seconds. That's six crews within two thirds of a boat length of each other after 14 minutes of racing. Looking ahead to the championship season next spring, it appears that that there are going to be a number of very well matched teams."
In the Varsity Heavyweight Fours, The Colonials finished 15th, 16th, 24th, and 42nd. "We set the fours up by class, and thought they were pretty evenly matched," said Myhr. "The seniors came out on top, but only slightly ahead of the sophomore / junior composite boat." Of note, though, was that 4 of the oarsmen in the top two GW fours had raced earlier in GW's 2nd eight - a result that Myhr found interesting, though not entirely surprising. "We have a very competitive group, and we are nowhere near getting them all sorted out. Seats in top boats this spring will be hard won and will have to be jealously guarded at every practice."
The Colonials Freshman Team had a solid showing in the Men's Heavyweight Freshman Eights event, placing 9th and 15th. "Our freshman squad shows a lot of promise, and did a very good job yesterday against some of the most highly recruited frosh crews in the country," said Myhr. "We are about evenly split between recruited experienced athletes and true novices, but several of these novices have progressed far enough already to have raced yesterday in the top freshman eight. Much like with the varsity squad, competition for seats in the frosh eight this spring will be fierce."
The GW Varsity squad will return to racing in March. The Freshman squad concludes its fall season this coming Saturday, November 1st, at the freshman fall novice race in Charlottesville, VA.
