James Sands Named Assistant Men's Rowing Coach

WASHINGTON, DC - James Sands has been named the men's rowing assistant coach at the George Washington University, which was announced by head coach Greg Myhr. Sands will be responsible for guiding the novice crews at GW which concists of mostly freshman and other first-year rowers.
"Though this will be his first collegiate coaching assignment, James has been involved in the sport for nearly a decade," said Myhr. "Collegiately, he cut his teeth at the nation's most prolific institution hands down, with regard to turning raw novices into elite oarsmen. I'm very excited to have James on board here at GW, and feel confident that he will be a key player in the Colonials' continued rise to national prominence," added Myhr.
Sands comes to the District by way of Madison, WI, where he competed for the Wisconsin Badgers for four seasons as a coxswain and an oarsman, where he was a member of several Midwest Championship winning boats.
As a coxswain in his Florida high school, Sands led several Florida Scholastic Championship winning crews, one of which eventually went on to win bronze at the Scholastic National Championships.
"The GW Men's Rowing Team is a rather unique program within the EARC, and the demands on our freshman coach here are far reaching," said Myhr. "Many of the oarsmen on our squad start off as complete novices their freshman year - it takes a special personality to be able to identify, cultivate, and mold these men into a competitive squad," concluded Myhr.
The George Washington men's rowing team made its debut in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) last season. GW will kick off its fall season on Sunday, October 14, when they compete at the Occoquan Chase.
