COLLEGE PARK, MD - The George Washington women's water polo team's three-game winning streak was snapped as the Colonials dropped an 11-4 decision at CWPA Southern Division rival Maryland on Wednesday.
After erupting for 11-or-more goals in each of its three victories at Villanova last Saturday, GW (4-9, 0-2 CWPA) struggled on offense against the Terrapins, going scoreless in both the first and third quarters of the loss.
The Colonials fell behind 3-0 after the first quarter and couldn't bounce back from Elizabeth Hopkins' four first-half goals. GW attempted to rally in the second frame, scoring three goals, but allowed four and trailed 7-3 at the half.
Reigning Southern Division Player of the Week Julie Jacoby shut out the Terrapins in the third quarter, but the Colonials' offense failed to take advantage. Jacoby, who ranks second in the nation with 12.0 saves per game, finished with 11 stops.
Freshman Bernadette Karandy led the charge with two goals, while senior Morgan Hooker and junior Rebecca Stein each tallied one goal.
GW returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, in Thousand Oaks, CA, against Cal Lutheran at 8:00 pm ET. That game marks the first of eight games in five days during the team's California spring break trip.
