Women's Water Polo Takes One of Three, Blasts Macalester

PASADENA & RIVERSIDE, CA - The George Washington women's water polo pounded Macalester 17-4 in its first of three games during its second day of Spring Break competition in California on Thursday.
Sophomore Caitlin Vartain and freshman Marissa Stamler each recorded hat tricks as GW (5-12) jumped to a 5-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back versus Macalester at Caltech in Pasadena, CA. The Colonials and junior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby, who posted 10 saves, allowed just one goal in each quarter to cruise to the win. Senior Morgan Hooker and rookie Emily Chereson added two goals apiece.
Junior Greta Pedraza and newcomer Tara Sullivan registered hat tricks in GW's second game of the day, but it wasn't enough as Occidental, the sixth-ranked team in Division III, dealt the Colonials a 9-8 loss, also at Caltech. GW led 2-0 after eight minutes, but the Tigers went on a 5-1 run in the second quarter to assume a 5-3 halftime cushion. The teams traded goals the rest of the way and the Colonials failed to convert on several scoring chances in the final 15 seconds. Hooker and junior Rebecca Stein tallied goals, while Jacoby made eight stops.
The Colonials suffered a similar second-quarter colapse in their final game of the day, allowing host California Baptist six goals in the period en route to a 10-6 defeat. GW went up 2-0 midway through the first quarter, but the Lancers closed the stanza with a pair of goals to knot the game at 2-2 and eventually led 8-3 at the intermission. Hooker finished with a hat trick and is now 12 goals shy of becoming the program's all-time leading goal scorer. Rookie Bernadette Karandy and Danielle Mayer had goals and Jacoby finished with nine stops.
The women's water polo team will take Friday off to prepare for the two-day, four-game Claremont Colleges Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. GW will visit the host institutions Pomona-Pitzer, ranked second in D-III, (11:30 am PDT) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, ranked fourth in D-III, (3:30 pm) on Saturday.
