ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - George Washington sophomore midfielder Mike Briscoe netted his first collegiate goal in the 76th minute, but St. Bonaventure managed to tally an equalizer with 2:40 remaining to tie the Colonials men's soccer team, 1-1, in their Atlantic 10 road finale Sunday afternoon.
Briscoe slotted the ball past Bonnies goalkeeper David Flynn and into the upper left corner of the net from an awkward angle to give GW a 1-0 advantage with less than 15 minutes to play. Briscoe got assists from sophomores Andy Stadler and Erick Perez-Segnini, who now have 17 and 15 points, respectively, this season.
St. Bonaventure (6-6-2, 3-3-1 A-10) evened the match in the 88th minute when Matt Culo beat redshirt junior goalkeeper Matt Scheer with a shot inside the six-yard box. Scheer made four saves in his seventh start of the season.
The Colonials had an opportunity for the game-winner in overtime, but Stadler's header missed the far post. GW outshot St. Bonaventure, 10-9, in regulation, but had a 4-1 shot deficit in the two overtime periods. SBU led 7-6 in corner kicks, while Flynn made two stops.
Despite the tie, the Colonials are now out of contention for an Atlantic 10 Championship berth, which are awarded to the top 6 teams in the final regular-season league standings.
GW (7-8-2, 1-4-2 A-10) closes the 2007 season with a pair of home league matches at Mount Vernon Field next weekend. The Colonials entertain Fordham on Friday, Nov. 9, at 1:00 pm and La Salle on Senior Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 pm.
