Men's Rowing to Open Fall Season at Occoquan Chase

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University Men's Rowing team will open its 2007-08 season at the Occoquan Chase in Woodbridge, VA, on Sunday, October 14.
"This marks the beginning of a very important year for the GW Men. We are entering our second year in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC), which is an incredibly high level of competition. I felt that we got a decent toe-hold last year, but we'll have to elevate what we're doing and how we're performing in order to be in the mix," said Head Coach Greg Myhr.
While GW won't face any league rivals at Sunday's Occoquan Chase, according to Myhr, the Colonials will have to hit the ground running. "The Occoquan Chase has traditionally been a relatively local regatta - it's a terrific season opener for us not just because of its proximity to Foggy Bottom, but because it's very well run and attracts a number of fast and highly motivated programs."
Looking forward, Myhr says he's excited about the depth of talent on his varsity squad. "For the first time in many years, we have three varsity eights full of oarsmen. What makes this more exciting for me, is that the pecking order is widely contested so far, which is generating a level of intrasquad competition, which I haven't seen here before. We have a lot of time and a lot of work in front of us before we're ready to face our spring competition, but we're starting with a nice reservoir of physical talent."
Last season at the Chase, the Colonials had a very strong performance as the Varsity Eight earned a second place finish while both the Freshman Fours and Eights recorded victories in their respective races.
After this Sunday, The Colonials will continue their fall season against some of the best teams in the country at the Head of the Charles in Boston, MA, on October 21, and then again at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, NJ on October 28.
