Men's Rowing Closes Season at IRA Championships

CHERRY HILL, NJ - The George Washington men's rowing crews completed it's 2006 season this past weekend at the IRA National Championships in Cherry Hill, NJ, finishing 19th in the varsity eight, and 16th in the open four events. GW also raced a freshman eight and freshman four, both of which did not advance to Saturday's finals, despite some excellent racing.
"This was the largest contingent GW has ever brought to the national championships," GW head coach Greg Myhr said. "In recent years, we've broken our varsity and freshman eights down to fours, and enjoyed a measure of success in those events. However, the eights are where the top oarsmen in the country are, and I think it was incredibly important for our team to have a crack at the mix, uphill battle that it was. While our varsity eight ended up in the fourth level final, the crews at that level are still very good, and it took our best race of the year to win that level. Overall, I think we laid a good foundation from which to build next year. We are not losing anyone from our varsity eight, and we have some excellent athletes rising from the freshman ranks. Assuming we keep pressing forward, we will hopefully be in a position to capitalize on the strides we've taken this year."
