
Seven Colonials Earn Academic Honors

BRIDGEPORT, PA -- Seven student-athletes on the GW women's water polo team were recognized by either the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) or the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for their academic achievements on June 16.
Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL), Rebecca Stein (San Diego, CA), Erin Bailey (Ann Arbor, MI) and Jenna Burnett (Lake Forest, CA) were recognized by both organizations.
Stein was named to both group's Academic Outstanding team (3.71-4.00 GPA) while Bailey, Heinemann and Burnett were named to both group's Academic Superior teams (3.41-3.70 GPA). Theresa Lamontagne (Bloomfield, CT) was named to the CWPA's Academic Superior team. Zelda Friedberger (Los Altos, CA) and Caitlin Vartain (Palo Alto, CA) were chosen to the CWPA's Academic Excellent squad (3.20-3.40 GPA).
Burnett led the team with 23 assists and was second on the squad with 23 goals while Heinemann, the team MVP, led the team with 138 saves in goal.
In addition to its individual accolades, GW also received the AWPCA's Academic Team Award, which is presented to schools with a team GPA greater than 2.75. The Colonials boasted a 3.29 team GPA, the ninth-highest mark in the AWPCA.
The Colonials posted an overall record of 10-15 last year and advanced to the CWPA Eastern Championship for the seventh straight time.
