Burnett Leads Women's Water Polo Past Villanova, 5-4

WASHINGTON, DC - A pair of goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter lifted the George Washington University women's water polo team to a 5-4 victory over Villanova Wednesday evening at Smith Center Pool. It was the Colonials second consecutive win against the Wildcats in eight days. Junior Jenna Burnett (Lake Forest, CA) led GW offensively with three goals, while goalies Julie Jacoby (Coral Gables, FL) and Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL) each recorded seven saves in net.
In a game dominated by aggressive defense, Villanova struck first in the opening period scoring on a man advantage. Two minutes later, Burnett put GW on the board to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams scored single goals in the second quarter and the game remained tied after three periods, 3-3.
But in the final quarter, the Colonials finally broke through scoring two unanswered goals in the opening two minutes of the frame to take the lead for good. The Wildcats managed to close the gap at 5-4, scoring with a 1:40 to play, but that would be as close as they could get as GW's defense did the rest and the clock ran out on Villanova's final possession.
Sophomores Sarah Stimson (Alamo, CA) and Kathryn Shehan (Chicago, IL) also had a goal each in the contest to lead GW, which has won four of its last seven games.
The Colonials (6-8) return to action when they travel to New York this weekend, March 24-25, to take on Iona on Friday and St. Francis College on Saturday.
