VILLANOVA, PA - Led by three goals in the fourth and decisive quarter, the George Washington University women's water polo team pulled away from Villanova Wednesday evening to defeat the Wildcats, 9-6, at the Villanova Swim Center. Freshman Amy Moren (Burbank, CA) scored five times on just six shot attempts to pace the Colonials' offensive attack.
In a game that went back-and-forth for three quarters, both teams scored just a single goal in the opening period. GW gained a bit of breathing room before halftime, outscoring the Wildcats 3-2 to take a 4-3 lead into intermission. The quarter was highlighted by senior goalie Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL) blocking a Wildcat penalty shot, her second of the season, which prevented Villanova from taking a two-goal lead at the time.
In the third quarter, both teams once again matched each others offensive output scoring two goals apiece. The Colonials would finally wear down Villanova in the final period, scoring three goals to the Wildcats' one to secure their fifth victory of the season.
Aside from Moren's five goals, GW's leading scorer Morgan Hooker (Woodland Hills, CA) netted two scores, while Jenna Burnett (Lake Forest, CA) and Erin Bailey (Ann Arbor, MI) each scored once. Heinemann finished the game with eight saves.
GW (5-8) returns to the pool when it welcomes Villanova to Smith Center on Wednesday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
