WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University Men's Rowing Team released its 2007 spring racing schedule this week, reflecting some dramatic changes from years past. The Colonials have been admitted to the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC), and will race a number of new league rivals, culminating at the 2007 Eastern Sprints in Worcester, MA. The EARC is now an 18 school league which encompasses all of the Ivy League as well as the Naval Academy, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Northeastern, Boston University, Syracuse, Georgetown, MIT, Holy Cross, and now, George Washington University.
"This is a thrilling development for our team," said men's coach Greg Myhr. "The sprints league is incredibly competitive across the board, not to mention laden with tradition. The Harvard and Yale rowing teams are the originators of intercollegiate athletic competition in this country. While we've been around for over 50 years, we are newcomers in every sense of the word by comparison. I think it speaks volumes about the character and progressive thinking of these long established programs to bring us into the league."
The GW Athletic Department has long supported both women's and men's intercollegiate rowing, and has welcomed the teams' competitive success over the years. The women have been members of the EAWRC for most of the past decade, and with this in mind, the GW athletic directors made the decision this fall to apply for membership for the men as well. "We are not an enormous athletic department," said Myhr, "but I couldn't ask for a more supportive administration. The support and enthusiasm they show for our growth and success and for that of all their teams is absolutely inspiring."
The 2007 Eastern Sprints will be held on May 13 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. The full 2007 spring racing schedule can be found at gwsports.cstv.com
