Men's Rowing Battles High Winds Up North

Princeton, NJ - While the past weekend promised plenty of action for GW Men's Rowing, high wind conditions forced the cancellation of Saturday's Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, and curtailed all but the eights racing at Sunday's Princeton Chase Regatta in Princeton, NJ.
The Colonials fielded two boats in the heavweight eights event at the Princeton Chase, but the Colonials varsity crew had a difficult time managing the wind conditions. "I doubt that any team felt they had a flawless row with that kind of wind, but top crews managed to generate speed and maintain composure in adverse conditions," said coach Greg Myhr. "We had some moments during the race where the boat was moving very well - maybe the best it has all season. We just weren't ready today to be able to hold it together in this kind of a situation."
In fact, the Colonials 2nd varsity boat of coxswain Caroline Emanuel, Grant LaFarge, James Hacker, Gorgi Popstefanov, Andrew Cummings, William Lee, Matt Brady, Tim Conroy and Andrew Lennox ended up with a better time than the varsity that consisted of coxswain Amy Garrison, Joe DeLeo, Oliver Blodgett, Jonathan D'Alba, Henry Roosevelt IV, Pete Magee, Ben Lookner, Alex Del Sordo and Michael Mancusi-Ungaro.
The first 2 miles of the course were relatively protected from the direct wind, but the final stretch turned directly into the wind. GW's varsity had a very difficult time holding its course, and along with Columbia University, missed several course buoys resulting in a 30 second penalty for each school. "Penalty aside, we didn't end up with a terribly quick time. As in any outdoor sport, everyone has to deal with whatever conditions present themselves. There are plenty of teams that got the job done today, so apparently it wasn't impossible. Today's results don't change my belief that this squad has a lot of promise, but promise is pretty meaningless unless we do something with it. A mentor of mine used to say that the harder you work, the luckier you get - we'll put that to the test in the coming months."
This was the final weekend of fall racing for GW's varsity squad. Next up for the Colonials is the freshman fall scrimmage this Saturday, November 4th, on the Potomac River against regional rivals Georgetown and Virginia.
