BETHLEHEM, PA - The George Washington University men's soccer team, playing its first game on the road after consecutive home tilts last week, fell to Lehigh, 2-0, Wednesday evening at Ulrich Field in non-conference action. Senior goalie Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA) highlighted play for the Colonials with 11 saves, while the trio of seniors Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY) and Jon Allen (Dobbs Ferry, NY), and junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL) each recorded three shots.
After battling to a scoreless tie for more than 30 minutes in the first half, the Mountain Hawks broke through in the 34th minute of play when Jim Stevens found the net off a cross from Michael Hessemer to make it 1-0. Lehigh would take a 1-0 advantage into intermission.
In the second half, with the Mountain Hawks still clinging to a 1-0 lead, Adam Gazda's corner kick in the 82nd minute found the foot of John O'Reilly who added an insurance goal to give Lehigh a commanding two-goal advantage with less than nine minutes to play. Mountain Hawks' goalie Charlie Sales preserved the lead over the final minutes, and finished the game with five saves.
Lehigh outshot GW by a narrow margin for the game, 21-18, but held a 13-5 advantage on shots on goal. Senior co-captian Trevor Martin (Chevy Chase, MD) and sophomore Thomas Stuber (Waukesha, WI) each finished with two shots as well, while Biss' 11 saves in goal were just shy of his season-high 12-save performance against American in the season opener.
GW (3-2-2) returns to action when it hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex at 2 p.m.
