Ten Colonials Earn Academic Honors

BRIDGEPORT, PA - Ten student-athletes on the GW women's water polo team were recognized by either the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) or the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for their academic achievements on June 16.
Taraneh Bastani, Amy Heinemann, Soleil Roberts, and Kendra Shanley were recognized by both organizations. Bastani, Heinemann, and Roberts were named to both group's Academic Superior teams (3.41-3.70 GPA) and Shanley was chosen to both group's Academic Excellent squads (3.20-3.40 GPA). Bastani contributed five goals last season, while Heinemann made 189 saves in goal, the third-highest single-season saves total in team history. Roberts chipped in 17 goals and recorded 10 assists in 2005. Shanley notched 33 goals in last season and finished her career ranked fourth all-time at GW with 115 tallies.
Rebecca Stein was named to the CWPA's Academic Outstanding Team (3.71-4.0 GPA) and registered five goals and seven steals last season. Theresa Lamontagne, Alessia Dinkel, and Julie Jacoby joined Shanley on the CWPA's Academic Excellent Team. Lamontagne and Dinkel each tallied 11 points in 2005 and Jacoby made 77 saves in the cage and sported a team-best 7.03 goals-against average.
Rounding out GW's academic honorees were Jenna Burnett and Erin Bailey. Burnett was picked to the CWPA Academic Superior Team and Bailey was named to the AWPCA's Academic Superior unit. Burnett ranked second on the team in 2005 with 38 goals and led the team with 63 points. She also had a team-high 35 steals. Bailey notched 15 goals last year and paced GW with 38 ejections drawn.
In addition to its individual accolades, GW also received each organization's Academic Team Award, which is presented to schools with a team GPA greater than 2.75. The Colonials boasted a 3.18 team GPA, the 16th-highest mark in the AWPCA and the 21st-best GPA among CWPA schools.
The Colonials went 13-17 last year and advanced to the CWPA Eastern Championship for the sixth straight time.
