CINCINNATI, OH - The George Washington University men's soccer team fell to Xavier, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the Xavier Soccer Complex. The Colonials held a 1-0 lead late in the game, but a pair of Musketeer goals in the final 10 minutes of action sunk GW. Sophomore Abimbola Pedro (Lagos, Nigeria) scored his first goal of the season in the first half to highlight play for the Colonials.
With the loss, GW falls to 3-5-2 overall, 0-2 in the A-10, while Xavier improves to 2-7-2, 1-0-1 in conference play.
In the first half, Pedro scored off a corner kick from junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL) in the 23rd minute to put the Colonials ahead 1-0. Sophomore Greg Yahr (Waukesha, WI) got the start for GW in goal and made two of his three saves in the first half to help GW maintain its 1-0 advantage heading into intermission.
The game remained 1-0 Colonials until the final 10 minutes of play. Jon Enders tied the game for the Musketeers in the 82nd minute off a corner kick from Matt Kmetz. Nearly seven minutes later, Enders netted the game winner off a deflection to give Xavier the narrow 2-1 victory.
The Musketeers outshot GW, 20-13, but the Colonials held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
