Lacrosse Drops A-10 Opener to UMass, 12-6

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW women's lacrosse team lost to the University of Massachusetts, 12-6, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. GW freshman Jamie Lee (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley) led the Colonials' attack with three goals but GW did not have the firepower to catch the Minutewomen who got four goals from Hope Zelinger, three goals from Maura McGarrity and a pair of scores from Jada Emery. It marked GW's first Atlantic 10 Conference game in the school's first season of women's lacrosse.
UMass opened the scoring 12 minutes into the contest with a goal by Emery and scored again six minutes later on a goal by Zelinger. GW got on the board with a goal by Meghan McDonough (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) at the 10:16 mark of the first half. Zelinger scored again less than a minute later for a 3-1 UMass advantage before GW's Lee scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon to bring GW to 3-2. McGarrity answered with a goal less than a minute later to close out the first half with a 4-2 UMass lead.
UMass opened the seond half with three goals in the first two minutes to break the game open at 7-2. GW's Lee scored at the 24:16 mark but the Minutewomen answered with five goals before GW would score again.
GW (1-2, 0-1 A-10) hosts Richmond Tuesday at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. That game begins at 3:30 p.m.
