Women's Basketball Struggles Against Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC (Dec. 5) - The Georgetown Hoyas sprinted out to an eight-point lead in the first three minutes and never looked back as the Colonials continued their struggles from the floor, shooting a season-low 34% from the field and falling to cross-town rival Georgetown 78-57.
GW (2-4) was without the services of their second-leading scorer and top rebounder senior forward Elena Vishniakova who did not dress for the game due to injury. Sophomore Valerie Williams got her first career start in her place, making the best of it, scoring 13 points on 6-8 shooting and gathering seven rebounds for the game. Junior forward Erica Lawrence led the Colonials with 15 points and was the only other GW player in double figures.
The Colonials never appeared to be in sync, turning over the ball 21 times, and hitting just one of 18 three-point attempts, an area that had been a staple of GW's offense in this early season. GU's zone stymied the Colonials who struggled to execute in their half court offense.
Early fouls also plagued GW, as sophomore center Ugo Oha was forced to sit with three fouls, playing only nine minutes in the first half. The main beneficiary of the resulting foul shots was GU forward Rebekkah Brunson who scored a career high 29 points with 19 coming from the charity stripe.
Down 17 points at the break, GW whittled away at the Hoyas' lead, cutting to 10 points early in the second half. The Colonials were never able to get any closer as GU capitalized on 10 GW turnovers in the second half.
GW will try and rebound from the loss as they host the DePaul Blue Demons at Smith Center on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2:00 p.m.
