WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 4) - The Colonials played their lone exhibition game of the season this afternoon, falling to a tough Russian club team, 74-63.
The Colonials trailed Dynamo of Moscow for the majority of a game marred by sloppy play by both teams who committed a combined 61 turnovers.
Dynamo led at the half 40-30, pulling away from the Colonials with opportunistic play, converting two steals into four points in the final seven seconds. The Russians would extend their lead to 15 points within the first three minutes of the second half.
GW hung tough with the top club team in Russia, chipping away at Dynamo's lead and pulling within three points with less than two minutes to play. However, the Colonials were unable to get any closer, missing their final shots and being forced to foul. Dynamo would extend the final deficit to 11, converting seven of 10 free throws in the closing moments.
Junior forward Erica Lawrence led all scorers with 18 points on 8-9 shooting in 27 minutes of play. Junior guard Cathy Joens scored 14 points, with sophomore center Ugo Oha adding 12 in the losing effort.
The Colonials open regular season play when they host University of Hartford at Smith Center on Saturday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
