Volleyball Drops to Howard on Opening Night

WASHINGTON – Opening the season in Burr Gymnasium, the Howard Bison got the best of George Washington volleyball on Friday evening as the Revolutionaries dropped the match in five sets to the home team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· GW inched out to an early lead in the opening frame, edging out the Bison, 25-23.
· Howard regained its momentum, taking the second (25-19) and third (25-20) stanzas from GW. The third was especially competitive, featuring six lead changes and 10 tied scores.
· Battling back in the fourth, the Buff & Blue forced the deciding set with a five-point victory over Howard.
· The fifth set proved to be tight, but after three lead changes, the Bison claimed match victory, 15-13, over George Washington on opening night of the D.C. Challenge.
BY THE NUMBERS
· 2024 All-Rookie selection Taylor Treahy picked up right where she left off, leading GW with 22 kills and seven blocks at the net.
· Grad transfer Sydney Hasenfratz wore the Buff & Blue for the first time on Friday evening, putting down 11 kills and tallying four blocks.
· Senior setter Dilara Elmacıoğlu fed the attack with 42 assists across the five sets.
· Sophomore transfers Alexis Rodriguez and Lydia Zeng also made their first appearances for GW, with each making a start for the Revolutionaries.
· As a team, GW put down 57 kills, three more than Howard's 54.
Tomorrow, GW returns to action at home in the Smith Center, welcoming the Virginia Cavaliers for a 3 p.m. matchup. Attendance is free for all fans and the match will also air live on ESPN+.
