Fifty years after the dedication of the Charles E. Smith Center on December 6, 1975, George Washington men's basketball will host William & Mary on December 6, 2025 in celebration of a half-century playing basketball in the venerable building in Foggy Bottom. William & Mary was the first Division I opponent that GW defeated in the Smith Center.
Ahead of a season-long celebration of 50 years in the Smith Center, GW is garnering significant attention in preseason prognostications and among a fanbase who saw the team enjoy its best season since 2017 a year ago.
The Tribe is also looking forward to the upcoming season as it comes off a 2024-25 campaign that saw Head Coach Brian Earl lead W&M to one of the top turnarounds in the country from '23-'24 to finish with 17 wins, a double bye in the CAA Championship for the first time in school history, and victories against A-10 foe Richmond and two-time defending CAA Champion Charleston.
The 1975-76 teams from both schools have been invited to the game to be celebrated before the 6 p.m. tipoff.
The last meeting between the schools saw GW win 95-89 in 2023-24 with then-freshmen Garrett Johnson and Trey Autry combining for 20 points. Trey Moss, then playing for William & Mary, had 11 points and five assists for the visitors.
George Washington will host several events on the weekend of December 5 - 6, 2025, which will also feature the induction of the 2025 GW Athletics Hall of Fame Class on Friday night, a women's basketball game vs. Brown on Saturday at 1 p.m. and an all former student-athlete reunion between the women's game and men's game on Saturday. The university has launched a website dedicated to the various 50th celebrations that will occur throughout the 2025-26 season.
