GW Hall of Fame Inductee Yinka Dare to Have Jersey Honored December 6

WASHINGTON - A weekend of celebration for GW legend Yinka Dare will culminate in having his #33 jersey permanently honored at the Smith Center. After being inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, December 5, the late Dare will be honored with a ceremony to hang his jersey in the rafters at halftime of the men's basketball contest vs. William & Mary on Saturday, December 6.
Dare, who was a member of the 1992-93 Sweet Sixteen team that was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022, left an incredible mark on the GW program despite only playing for two years. Dare was named the 1993 A-10 Rookie and Newcomer of the Year, team MVP in both of his seasons and was a two-time Second Team All-Atlantic 10 player.
The native Nigerian is still GW's all-time leader in blocks per game and ranks sixth all-time in rebounds per contest. He became just the second first-round pick in program history (Joe Holup, 1956) when he was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in 1994.
Tragically, Dare passed away from a heart attack at the age of 31 in 2004. Friends, teammates and family members will be in attendance to accept the posthumous honor.
Tickets are available for the entire Hall of Fame Weekend on Dec. 5-6, which coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Smith Center celebration on Dec. 6.
