Volleyball Hangs With Dayton but Falls in Five

WASHINGTON – A competitive five-set match on Friday night in the Charles E. Smith Center didn't go GW's way as the Revolutionaries fell to Dayton, 3-2. GW dropped to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the A-10.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED

A 9-2 Flyers' run in the middle of set one crashed the Revolutionaries' hopes of winning the opening set as Dayton claimed the first, 25-16.Â

GW got right back in the match in set two, winning the closest played game that featured seven ties and three lead changes. Dayton had set point at 25-24, but the Revolutionaries charged ahead and used consecutive kills from Alexis Rodriguez, Sydney Hasenfratz and Abby Markworth to claim a 27-25 set win.

The Revolutionaries jumped ahead early in the third, claiming the lead at 3-2 and never relenting. A 6-2 GW run midway through the frame gave the home team a 14-8 lead, before GW rattled off a 9-3 run to close the set and go ahead in the match, 2-1, with a 25-16 set victory.Â

Dayton led from start to finish in the fourth set. The Flyers took a quick 6-1 lead, and held at-least a four-point advantage from that point on as they owned the fourth in a 25-17 win.Â

Dayton paced the start of the fifth, but GW stayed close. The Flyers, leading 10-8 just after the side change, closed the match with a 5-0 run to claim victory and keep its unbeaten A-10 record.Â

Opposite hitter Taylor Treahy led GW in kills (16 kills), backed by GW's outsides, Alexis Rodriguez (14 kills) and Cayla Cogan (12 kills).Â

Setter Abby Markworth delivered 49 assists.Â

Rodriguez accounted for all three of GW's aces.Â

Rodriguez led the back row with 19 digs, followed by Markworth with 11 Penelope Hiepler with 10.Â

GW had 60+ kills for the sixth time this season.Â
