Volleyball Stumbles in Final Match of DC Showdown

WASHINGTON – Despite a strong first set which resulted in a 25-21 win for the Revolutionaries, the George Washington volleyball team ultimately fell, 3-1, to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. The Buff & Blue drop to 7-3 on the young season with one weekend of non-conference action left on the calendar.
Following the set one victory, GW found itself in a tight battle in the second frame. Neither team built an advantage of more than three throughout, with GW holding a 22-19 advantage in the closing stages of the stanza. The Hoyas proceeded to use a 4-0 run to capture a 23-22 lead and ultimately hung on for a 26-24 win to even the match at one apiece.
Georgetown flipped the script on GW in the third set, running out to a 13-3 lead and cruising to a 25-8 win. Needing just one more set to secure the match, Georgetown wasn't able to put any distance between itself and the GW Revs in the third. The teams found themselves deadlocked at 20 apiece after trading blows throughout the entire frame. The two teams alternated points until the score was tied at 25, then Georgetown stepped up and secured two straight to win 27-25. The victory moves the Hoyas to 7-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the DC Showdown.
Leading the way for GDUB was Salem Yohannes who poured in 14 kills to go along with 17 digs and three assists. Cianna Tejada notched 11 kills and two block assists, while Haylee Brown and Taylor Treahy both added nine kills. Libero Amina Robinson chipped in 12 digs defensively for the Revolutionaries, while Dilara Elmacioglu guided the offense with 28 assists.
Following six days off, GW returns to action to take part in the Delaware State Tournament. GW is scheduled to battle NJIT on Friday at 4:00 p.m., then will face host Delaware State (1:30 p.m.) and Harvard (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday. All matches will be held at Memorial Hall Gym in Dover, Delaware.
