WASHINGTON – The George Washington volleyball team picked up two 3-1 victories en route to sweeping day one of the DC Showdown Friday. The Buff & Blue topped Rider in the matinee matchup, then stuck around to defeat IU Indy in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
George Washington 3, Rider 1
Following a slow start which resulted in a 25-19 loss in set one, the George Washington volleyball team bounced back in a big way, taking the next three sets for a 3-1 victory over Rider. GW's victory in set two was aided in large part by an early 5-0 run, and later in the set a 4-0 spurt made the score 16-10. Despite the Broncs' best effort at a comeback, the Buff & Blue held strong for a 25-22 victory to knot the match at one. Set three was a back-and-forth affair, which saw both teams trade points down the stretch. The Revolutionaries used a short 3-0 spurt to make the score 23-20, then traded blows with Rider until the Buff & Blue prevailed victorious at 25-23. Set four was all GW, using a 10-2 run to close out the match and win 25-15.
Taylor Treahy played a big role in GW's victory, notching a team-high 13 kills to go along with five digs. Treahy hit a monster .545 in the match, connecting on 13-of-22 attacks for the Revolutionaries. MC Daubendiek also played strong for GW, notching 10 kills and two block assists. As a team, the Buff & Blue combined for 14 block assists, headlined by Kelsey Watkins, who tallied five on her own. Dilara Elmacioglu and Grace Allread tallied 18 and 17 assists, respectively, while Salem Yohannes finished with four service aces for GDUB. Rider was paced by Kiannisha Santiago with 17 kills, while Rylah Robinson added 16.
GAME TWO
George Washington 3, IU Indy 1
Much like the first match of the day, GW struggled to find consistency out of the gates. The Jaguars took advantage of Buff & Blue miscues to grab the first set, 25-23. Despite the slow start, GW found its footing fast, rolling to a quick 25-17 win in set two, then following it up with a 25-15 drubbing in the third stanza. Despite being handled in the latter two sets, IU Indy didn't go away quietly, leading by as many as four in the fourth frame. Unfazed, GW used an 8-1 run to snatch the lead right back from the Jaguars. Despite the momentum, neither team found much separation through the middle part of the set with GW needing just one more point to seal the match at 24-21. IU Indy then went on a 3-0 spurt to knot the set at 24-24 before GW came up clutch and secured the two points needed for victory.
Leading the way for the Buff & Blue was Treahy who notched 14 kills and three service aces. GW recorded nine service aces as a team in the match, with Elmacioglu and Tejada both chipping in two apiece. Yohannes recorded 10 kills for GDUB as well, while Allread dished out 21 assists. Yohannes led GW defensively with 18 digs.
