Second Half Rally Comes Up Short for Women’s Soccer

WASHINGTON – Despite a ferocious second half rally, the George Washington women's soccer team fell in the second match of the 2024 season to Binghamton, 3-2. The Revolutionaries fell into a 3-0 hole early in the second half but managed to tally two goals in the final 35 minutes of action to nearly complete the comeback.

The Buff & Blue return to the pitch on Thursday, traveling to Loyola (Md.) for a 6:00 p.m. match. The match will be aired live on ESPN+.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 9th Minute: Binghamton's Anna Buckwalter opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Hannah Mimas. The goal was Binghamton's first of the year in the team's season-opener.
- 32nd Minute: The Bearcats struck again later in the half, doubling their lead via a goal from Mimas. Assisting on the play was Paige Luke.
- 48th Minute: Just out of the halftime break, Buckwalter registered her second goal of the day to extend the Bearcat lead to 3-0. Buckwalter's second goal was unassisted.
- 55th Minute: GW trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the 55th minute courtesy of a goal from graduate forward Lauren Prentice. Prentice rebounded her own deflected shot and punched the ball in just past the right post for her first score of the season.
- 77th Minute: Sophomore Rose Vigran notched her first career goal later in the second half, taking a cross from first-year Alex Caldwell and burying it into the net. The goal cut Binghamton's deficit down to 3-2, but that would be as close as GW would get.
NOTEWORTHY
- After not registering a shot on goal in the first half, GW tallied 12 total shots in the match, including five on net. Binghamton finished with a slight edge in shots with 14, four of which were on target.
- Kaitlyn Williams started in goal for Binghamton, playing the first 45 minutes before being subbed out for Rebecca Kessler at halftime. Kessler tallied three saves in the second half.
- Ainsley Lumpe played all 90 minutes at goalkeeper for the Revolutionaries. She tallied one save for the Buff & Blue.
- Binghamton committed 11 fouls compared to five for GW, while also finishing with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
