LEXINGTON, Ky. – Graduate student Ryan Fowkes put a cap on his outstanding season with an appearance in the 5000m at the NCAA East First Round hosted by the University of Kentucky. Fowkes was the lone Revolutionary to advance to the NCAA meet.
Competing in a pool of 48 runners, Fowkes' race started at 8:10 Friday night in Lexington. Fowkes competed in the first of two heats for the 5K, with the top five runners from each race plus the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers advancing to next week's NCAA National Championships. In heat one, Fowkes entered as the two-seed with a PR time of 13:49.83 in the event. That mark is also the current program record for GW in the event. The lone runner with a faster time than Fowkes in his heat was Parker Wolfe of North Carolina, who had clocked a 13:13.61 earlier this season.
Fowkes ultimately finished 21st in his heat, recording a time of 14:34.70. His time landed him a 39th place finish overall when combining the two heats of 48 runners. Fowkes was one of only two runners from the A-10 to compete in the race, finishing 0.66 seconds behind La Salle's Taonga Mbambo, who finished 38th overall and 18th in heat #2. Mbambo was the runner-up in the 5K at this year's Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships.
The conclusion of the event marks the end of the season for GW track. The Revolutionaries enjoyed a stellar outdoor campaign that included eight new program records across the men's and women's teams.
