PITTSBURGH - A back-and-forth affair in the season finale on Saturday afternoon for GW men's basketball came down to the final possession, and a foul call with 2.9 seconds remaining allowed Duquesne to break the tie and eke out a 67-65 victory at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
James Bishop IV tied the game for the 10th time on a runner with 41 seconds remaining, evening the score at 65-65. GW played strong defense on the ensuing possession, forcing a tough jumper from the Dukes' Dae Dae Grant, but the rebound was ruled off of GW, giving Duquesne a second chance.
Jimmy Clark III got the next chance for Duquesne, driving into the paint and seeing the shot affected by Babatunde Akingbola, who was whistled for the foul. Clark made both, cementing the Dukes' 11-of-11 day at the charity stripe. Maximus Edwards couldn't connect on a half-court shot attempt to end the game.
Neither team led by more than eight in a contest that featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes. GW trailed by five with just over three minutes left, but an Edwards 3-pointer and a Akingbola layup tied things up at 63. Clark scored the final four points for the Dukes at the free throw line around Bishop's jumper.
Darren Buchanan Jr. led the Buff & Blue on the day with another strong effort of 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in his final audition to become GW's second-straight A-10 Rookie of the Year.
