BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Despite leading for over 32 minutes in Tuesday afternoon's opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, GW men's basketball wasn't able to finish off a victory, falling 61-60 to La Salle at the Barclays Center.
GW held a 60-59 lead entering the final minute thanks to a 3-pointer from Darren Buchanan Jr. with 1:56 remaining. After an exchange of empty trips, La Salle had the ball with less than a minute to go. Following a pair of GW fouls, the Explorers' Jhamir Brickus hit a tough stepback to give La Salle the lead back.
On the final possession, GW got an open look for James Bishop IV, eerily similar to his game-winner earlier this season at VCU. This time, though, the ball wouldn't go in, and despite an offensive rebound, a desperation 3-pointer from Bishop also missed, ending the Revolutionaries' season.
The Buff & Blue played arguably their best defensive game of A-10 play, limiting La Salle to 25% shooting in the first half while building a 30-23 halftime advantage. Uncharacteristically, though, the GW offense struggled to get in gear, shooting just 29% in its own right before halftime.
In the second half, La Salle utilized a 13-2 run to take a 43-38 lead, but GW finally found its rhythm with a 12-2 spurt of its own to wrestle the lead back and set the stage for the unfortunately dramatic conclusion.
In his final game donning the Buff & Blue, James Bishop IV led the Revolutionaries with 19 points, including 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Bishop ends his illustrious GW career with 2,103 points, third-most all-time, and also among the program's top-five in 3-pointers made (t-3rd), field goals made (4th) and free throws made (4th).
Darren Buchanan Jr. added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists while Maximus Edwards chipped in 10 points with nine caroms collected.
