FAIRFAX, Va. - GW men's basketball suffered its seventh-straight defeat on Tuesday night at George Mason, falling 90-67. The two teams have now split the season series in each of the last three years.
Playing without Darren Buchanan Jr. for the first time all season, GW was never able to get in gear on either end of the floor. George Mason, which shot just 32.8% and hit only five 3-pointers in the team's first meeting last month, came out blazing with three triples in the opening 2:30.
The Patriots led 14-2 at the first media timeout and only expanded the lead from there, taking a 54-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. George Mason made 14 of its first 20 shots and shot 61% with seven 3-pointers in the first half while GW shot just 31% in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half started similarly as Mason pushed the lead to as many as 39 with 11:39 left. GW finally found a rhythm at that point, outscoring the Patriots 28-12 the rest of the way.
GW got a season-high scoring performance from Antoine Smith Jr., who scored 13 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting day that included three 3-pointers. Maximus Edwards (12 points) and James Bishop IV (10) also reached double digits for the Buff & Blue.
GW will be back at home on Saturday when it hosts Richmond for the annual White Out presented by GW Hospital. TIp-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on USA Network.
