Richmond, Va. – Despite claiming the first and third sets, the GW Volleyball team fell to the VCU Rams in a five-set thriller Friday evening, 3-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
Salem Yohannes and Haylee Brown led the GW offense Friday evening, scoring 10 kills apiece. At setter, Abby Markworth earned the starting nod, fueling the attack with 21 assists and two service aces. At the net, Sydney Stewart and Cianna Tejada combined for nine blocks, while Reilly Heinrich chipped in 13 digs at libero.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening frame was a back-and-forth affair between two of the top squads in the league. The Rams offense proved to be a challenge for GW, with the sequence featuring 16 tied scores. Late in the set, Markworth served an ace to push the momentum in favor of GW, but the Rams quickly responded. A kill from Yohannes and a subsequent set of blocks from the GW front row propelled the Revolutionaries to eventually claim the set, 25-23.
GW struggled to find consistent footing in the second. Despite a battle back in the second half of the set, the Rams claimed the second from the GW Revs, 25-15.
To start the third, GW opened action off another service run from Markworth to climb to a 4-0 lead over VCU. The Rams responded to tie the frame at 10 apiece, but GW regained the upper hand. In the final moments, Stewart and Taylor Treahy put down back-to-back kills to seal the set for GW, 25-22.
In the fourth, GW once again struggled to find its footing, with VCU climbing out to an early lead. The Revolutionaries offense battled back, going on a 5-0 run to minimize the gap with the Rams. Despite GW's offensive energy, the Rams claimed the fourth, 25-18, forcing a fifth set.
In the fifth, Brown opened up the sequence with a kill for GW, yet the Rams offense immediately responded. The score was tied five times early in the final, shortened frame, but the Rams claimed the match 3-2 over GW with a 15-6 victory in the last set.
The Revolutionaries will return to action tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. to face the Rams for the series finale.
