HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one began as a back-and-forth matchup between the two teams, with Davidson holding a four-point advantage three times throughout the set, the largest lead from either side in the opening frame. The Wildcats had one of their four-point leads at 23-19 and again at 24-20, eventually putting set one away, 25-20.
12 ties came in the second set, with GW holding a 15-12 lead before three-straight points from the Wildcats evened the set at 15 apiece. The Buff & Blue then sketched another three-point lead, one Davidson would erase again, this time helping to close the second set and go up 2-0 in the match.
Behind a .316 hitting percentage, GW out-hit Davidson 15 kills to 11 in set three, limiting the Wildcats to a .048 efficiency. GW took control of the set at 2-1 and never looked back, stretching its lead to 19-6, staving off a Davidson comeback attempt to force a fourth set and avoid a 3-0 sweep.
Midway through set four, GW held a 15-11 lead over the Wildcats before the home team went on a six-point scoring run to gain control at 17-15. From there, GW kept it close before another scoring run by Davidson led to a 23-17 advantage, helping the Wildcats to a win on the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play.
GW will have the chance to even the season series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Belk Arena.
