Volleyball Tops Norfolk State, 3-1, in Final Non-Conference Matchup

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After dropping the opening set, GW volleyball won three-straight sets to earn a 3-1 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday with set scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15.
BY THE NUMBERS
Brittany Myers was the offensive weapon for GW on Saturday, recording a season-high 17 kills behind a career-best .452 hitting percentage (17k, three errors, 31 total attempts). Salem Yohannes posted her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Liv Womble added 11 kills, and as a team, GW had its most efficient match of the season, finishing with a .280% with 59 kills. Maeve Loughran recorded 25 assists, her second-straight match with 25 or more assists, and Dilara Elmacioglu was credited with 18 assists and tallied 10 digs.
Amina Robinson scooped up 16 digs to lead GW defensively. MC Daubendiek and Loukia Papadakos each came up with three blocks at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Helped by seven kills from Myers, GW moved to a comfortable 16-10 lead over the Spartans in set one. An eight-point scoring run from Norfolk State changed the story of the opening set, with the Spartans taking control and burying six kills to earn a 25-18 set one victory.
GW put down 18 kills in set two and overcame an 18-12 deficit to even the match at one set apiece. GW cut the Spartan lead to two at 19-17, then outscored Norfolk State 8-2 in the final moments of the second frame, finishing the set with five kills, four of which came from Myers.
A 10-3 scoring run in favor of George Washington began set three. GW continued the offensive pressure, stretching its lead to 20-13, avoiding a Norfolk State comeback attempt, and finishing the set on a three-point scoring run to go ahead 2-1 on the match with a 25-21 set victory.
Taking advantage of six Norfolk State errors and a six-point scoring run, GW jumped to a 12-3 lead in set four. The Buff & Blue maintained a nine-point cushion at 19-10 and tallied four more kills, which helped seal the 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
GW begins Atlantic 10 play next weekend, visiting Davidson on Saturday and Sunday in a recently revised schedule. The Revolutionaries and Wildcats will play on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m.
