Women’s Soccer Plays American to Draw

WASHINGTON - Despite leading 3-0 at halftime, the George Washington women's soccer team finished in a 3-3 draw with American on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 4th Minute: First-year Kate McGrath got GW on the board early with her second goal of the season. McGrath's score came off an assist from fellow first-year Alexa Meinen.
- 9th Minute: McGrath quickly tallied her second goal of the day, doubling GW's lead in the ninth minute. McGrath's second goal was assisted by sophomore Aoi Kataoka.
- 26th Minute: GW pushed its lead to 3-0 off a goal from junior Kelly Poole midway through the first half. Assisting on the play was Kataoka who picked up her second assist of the day, and McGrath who tallied her first assist of the year. With the assist McGrath finished with a career-high five points on the day.
- 53rd Minute: Lailah Stewart put American on the scoreboard early in the second half. Stewart's goal was her first of the season and was unassisted.
- 80th Minute: The Eagles trimmed into GW's lead again late in the match when Stewart dished a pass off to Alyssa Giroux who buried a deep shot into the upper right corner of the goal.
- 86th Minute: Giroux tallied the equalizing goal in the waning minutes of the match. The goal was unassisted and marked Giroux's second of the match.
NOTEWORTHY
- American finished with a 20-18 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in shots-on-goal.
- The Revolutionaries finished with an 8-5 lead in corner kicks.
- Both teams finished with an even 13 fouls apiece.
- Junior Alicia Window and sophomore Avril Silva were both issued a yellow card during the match.
- GW's Rose Hemans finished with seven saves on the day while Julia Kato tallied two saves for the Eagles.
- With two assists today, Kataoka now has six on the season. That places her in a tie for fifth in the nation for total assists.
- GW now sits at 14-5-3 all-time against America. The teams have played to a draw in the past two meetings.
