On Wednesday night at halftime of the GW women's basketball game vs. Davidson, GW student-athletes who qualified for Athletics' Dean's List were feted. Athletics Director Tanya Vogel and Faculty Athletics Representative Bev Westerman celebrated student-athletes who earned a 3.0 or better GPA in the spring or fall of 2022.
Â
Of the nearly 400 student-athletes competing for the university's 20 varsity teams, 299 earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher last semester, as the department achieved a cume 3.37 GPA in the fall with more than a hundred student-athletes taking on GW's academic rigor for the first time. 183 student-athletes achieved a 3.5+.Â
A testament to the extraordinary work of GW's distinguished Faculty and staff, the Department of Athletics' commitment to higher education, and the efforts of the Educational Support Services unit -- which is guided by Senior Associate Athletics Director Danya Ellman, led by James Hellekjaer, and assisted by Stephen McNamara, Natalie Ellard, Joe Strickland, Samantha Mele and Taylor Thomas -- 30 student-athletes achieved perfection in the form of a 4.0 GPA in the fall.
Among them, Patrick Castellano (men's cross country and track), Brendan Conley (men's swimming & diving), Markella Lanara (volleyball), Payton Lynch (gymnastics) and Tim Neumann (men's soccer) earned a 4.0 in both semesters in 2022.Â
Â
Also on Wednesday night, Dr. Kyle Levers was awarded this year's Student-Athletes' Choice for Professor of the Year, in a celebration of the academic excellence of the George Washington University, which is now in its third century of educating the next generation of citizen leaders.Â
